Jack Penate : Matinee - Review

I've been a long time follower of Jack Penate though I have to admit that my first viewing of a track on MTV left me thinking WTF is this guy on. I've been to a number of his gigs in and around Leeds, some of which I have to admit I don’t recall due to the odd shandy or two... anyway on to the album review.

Jacks' vocal styling and off beat, strum based guitar create a uniquely fresh sound that establishes his new album, Matinee as one of the leading albums of this new genre of London centric Indi Rock.

This being said, overall there’s not enough variety in Matinee to make any single song stand above the rest and the album seems to be waiting for something to punch through to make you sit up and pay attention, though don’t go thinking this is another rambling affair such as those pumped out by the terrible Angels and Airwaves.

Jack Penates' Matinee is a relaxing listen that requires some attention to enjoy to its fullest. This being said its nowhere near as good as his live stuff so go and see some of that if you get the chance. You get a free badge for signing up to his mailing list... I've got three lol!

So in short, a worthy first album but needs to get out of London more!
7/10
